A self-styled traditional healer or sangoma in Chivi has appeared in court after he allegedly inserted his fingers into the privates of four girls, supposedly to remove evil spirits.
Kokerai Rufu, 45, pleaded not guilty to aggravated indecent assault when he appeared before Chivi resident Magistrate, Bishard Chineka, on Monday.
His victims are sisters aged 10, 13, 15 and 17. He was remanded in custody for continuation of trial while the girls have been ordered to go for medical examinations.
Prosecutor Nathan Zaranyika told the court that sometime in August this year, Rufu passed by his victims’ homestead where they stay with their elderly grandmother.
He told the grandmother that the four girls had evil spirits that needed to be exorcised, adding the spirits could be removed through the girls’ private parts.
Court was told that Rufu then called the girls separately into a hut where he inserted his fingers in their private parts saying that he was cleansing them of evil spirits.
The abuse came to light on October 24 when the girls’ father returned from South Africa and was told of the cleansing incident.
He proceeded to make a police report, leading to the arrest of the self-styled healer.
