Netflix picks up SA movie

The South African film Ayanda is the first local film to be picked up by international streaming service Netflix for syndication across several countries, including the US, Canada and South Africa.

“The Netflix release is fantastic news and, in a way, is the realisation of a dream,” said director Sara Blecher.

Ayanda is one of the first films to be released on the platform,” said Blecher.

The film will be screened at more than 10 international festivals over the next few months, including the Göteborg Film Festival in Sweden, the Toronto International Film Festival’s Next Wave, the Toronto Black Film Festival and the San Francisco Independent Film Festival.

The film is a love story chronicling the sordid struggle of a 22-year-old mechanic to hang onto her father’s legacy while dealing with her sexual distractions.

The film has won a number of African movie awards, including the 2015 Africa Magic Viewers’ Award.

The film premiered on DStv Box Office and runs there until January 25.

The DVD will be released next month.
