A man from Rusape tried to burn his wife and daughter with paraffin while they slept after finding there was no food for him upon returning from a night out, a local court heard.
Innocent Fambi, 22, of Vhengere high density area appeared before Rusape magistrate, Shingi Mutiro, facing attempted murder charges.
Asked why he committed the offence, Fambi said: “Your Worship, she went to church without cooking for me and I was hungry and I wanted to discipline her.”
He will be back in the dock on October 21 for sentencing after pleading guilty to the charges.
Prosecutor, Tofara Chawatama, told the court that on September 21, Fambi had a dispute with his wife who he accused of being stubborn and failing to prepare food for him.
The court heard that Fambi was angry that his wife attended night prayers at a local church without preparing supper from him.
The prosecutor said, on the night in question, Fambi came home late and found his wife sleeping with their daughter in the bedroom.
He locked the door and poured paraffin on some clothing items and set them on fire.
Sensing danger, Fambi`s wife screamed for help.
She was rescued by one constable Maria Chemuli who was passing by near their bedroom window and heard the noise.
Fambi was promptly arrested.
