How 1 Instagram Account Is Calling for More Diversity in the Fashion World

It’s not a secret that the fashion industry is overwhelmingly white. In fact, a recent report shows that despite the recent push for more diversity, a staggering 84 percent of models in fashion ads are still white. One anonymous Instagram user is trying to fight that with a new account called More Models of Color, which celebrates women of color in the fashion world including new models such as Alice Metza, Yuan Bo Chao, and Pooja Mor.

“The idea that European features are the epitome of beauty needs to be abolished,” the account’s founder told Dazed. “All girls, regardless of their ethnic background, have the right to see themselves portrayed in the fashion industry.” Considering that last year, 75 percent of the models who walked in New York Fashion Week were white, this Instagram account couldn’t have come at a better time. Here’s hoping that soon enough, diversity will become the norm in the fashion industry and accounts like this won’t be needed.
