Five pupils injured in School Knife FIGHT

Cape Town, South Africa – Five pupils were injured at a Khayelitsha school after a knife fight broke out on Thursday morning in what is believed to have been a revenge attack.

Millicent Merton, a spokeswoman for the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), said Bulumko High School had reported that pupils were seen running into the school administration block with knives before the start of classes on Thursday morning.

She said the incident followed an incident in the area on Wednesday night “when a group of community members apparently retaliated against alleged perpetrators of violence”.

“Some community members allegedly instigated the fighting at the school this morning (Thursday).”

Merton said police had told the education department that patrols in the area would be stepped up.

“The WCED is working together with our various stakeholders, including Safe Schools, to improve the safety of learners and educators affected by gang violence. The WCED as well as our Safe Schools officials will continue to engage with the police when it comes to stepping up law enforcement around our schools.”

She said a meeting to discuss gangsterism in the area had been scheduled for Thursday night at the Empilweni Centre.

knife fightPolice spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said three pupils aged between 16 and 17 had been stabbed and hospitalised .

“A case of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm was opened for investigation. It has been reported that this altercation started yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon where one of the suspects was a victim of assault.

“One learner was arrested for possession of a dangerous weapon. The investigation continues.”

On August 12 the Cape Argus reported that parents had locked the school’s gates following a series of gang incidents.

Pupils were unable to get to their classes after the gates were shut by parents who demanded something be done to rid the school of gangs.

At the time one parent told of how her daughter had come home in shock after gangs had invaded the school.
