Good Friday holiday ended disastrous for a police officer yesterday after allegedly hitting a female pedestrian to death before injuring five in Chipinge town.
Eye witnesses allege a drunk cop in uniform identified as Chaipa was speeding with a Mercedes Benz borrowed from a mechanic identified as Welly.
According sources, Chaipa had two passengers on board – touts from Chipinge terminus. It is alleged that the touts encouraged Chaipa to speed resulting in the fatal accident.
“The cop was speeding to and from town and people warned him but he paid a deaf ear since the touts he had on board were encouraging him to speed saying they were in Easter mood.
Chaipa hit a woman to death, injuring the there people including a child before he veered off the road and overturned three times thereby injuries the touts he had on board,” said the source.
The injured five were ferried to Chipinge general hospital and are in critical condition.
The mob was baying for his blood for negligence driving and not respecting human life.
It was further reported that his colleagues had to take him away to save him from being butchered by the public.
However, Chipinge district police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Blessing Kadzuraumera could not be reached for comment in time.
